Pet CPR basics

Start CPR when there is no breathing, no consciousness and no heartbeat — while someone else calls the hospital. Cats/small dogs differ from large dogs.

⚠️ 🚨 Urgence

CPR breaks ribs even when done right — use only for true cardiac/respiratory arrest.

🚨 Étapes de premiers secours

  1. 1Confirm: no response, no chest movement, no heartbeat (behind the elbow)
  2. 2Side position. Cats and small dogs: one hand wrapped around the chest, thumb on one side fingers on the other, squeeze the heart directly (100-120/min)
  3. 3Medium/large dogs: two stacked hands over the widest part of the chest (just behind the elbows), compress 1/3-1/2 of chest depth
  4. 430 compressions + 2 breaths (straighten the neck, close the mouth, breathe into the nostrils until the chest rises)
  5. 5Cycle continuously; re-check heartbeat every 2 minutes
  6. 6Have someone drive you to the hospital while you continue — don't stop before arrival

⛔ À ne jamais faire

  • ✕Don't compress a pet that has heartbeat or breathing
  • ✕Don't stop from fatigue (swap rescuers)
  • ✕Don't delay the call — phone and CPR happen together

🏥 Consultez immédiatement si :

  • ⚠Starting CPR is itself a reason to transport
  • ⚠Even after breathing/heartbeat return, a full check is needed
