Vomiting en perros: qué hacer

Vomiting is one of the most common reasons dogs see a vet — an occasional episode is usually minor, but repeated or persistent vomiting deserves attention.

¿Cuáles son las causas frecuentes?

Acute gastroenteritis

Observar 48 horas

The most common digestive problem, usually from diet indiscretion (scavenging, sudden food changes) or mild infection.

Canine parvovirus

Urgencia — ve ahora

A highly contagious viral disease attacking unvaccinated puppies, with high mortality — earlier treatment means better outcomes.

Intestinal foreign body / obstruction

Veterinario en 24 horas

Swallowed toys, socks or bones block the intestine; persistent vomiting is the earliest sign.

Pancreatitis

Veterinario en 24 horas

Often triggered by a fatty feast (table scraps, fatty meat); Schnauzers and similar breeds are higher risk.

Poisoning (food / plant / chemical)

Urgencia — ve ahora

Chocolate, xylitol, rodenticide, antifreeze and more can be fatal; onset speed varies by toxin.

Intestinal parasites

Observación en casa

Roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms and more — common in puppies, causing anemia and malnutrition.

Canine vestibular syndrome

Veterinario en 24 horas

A balance-system (inner ear / brainstem) problem: sudden head tilt, flicking eyes and stumbling. Idiopathic geriatric vestibular syndrome is the most common form and mostly resolves in days to weeks — but ear infection, toxins and brain disease must be ruled out first.

Pyometra (uterine infection)

Urgencia — ve ahora

A post-heat emergency of unspayed females: the uterus fills with pus and toxins. The open form shows vulvar discharge; the closed form hides it and delays diagnosis. Spay surgery is the only cure.

Heatstroke

Urgencia — ve ahora

Dogs can only cool by panting — hot, humid or enclosed conditions (cars!) can kill within minutes.

Cuidados y observación en casa

  • ✓Withhold food 4-6 hours (2-3 for puppies), offering small amounts of water often
  • ✓Resume feeding with a bland diet (boiled chicken and rice)
  • ✓Log vomiting/diarrhea frequency and appearance (blood? foreign objects?)
  • ✓Keep water available to prevent dehydration
  • ✓Isolate from other dogs immediately
  • ✓Do not force food or water by mouth

¿Cuándo hay que ir al veterinario sí o sí?

  • ⚠Vomiting or diarrhea beyond 24 hours
  • ⚠Bloody stool or clearly declining energy
  • ⚠Suspected foreign body or toxin ingestion
  • ⚠Any puppy with vomiting + bloody diarrhea + lethargy
  • ⚠Vomiting or diarrhea in a puppy with incomplete vaccines
  • ⚠Repeated vomiting over 12 hours

Preguntas frecuentes
