Suspected fracture / fall from height
Deformity, inability to bear weight and severe pain suggest fracture. Your job is not «reduction» — it's immobilization, pain control and fast transport.
⚠️ 🚨 Emergency
Fractured ends shift and cut tissue — never pull the injured limb.
🚨 First-aid steps
- 1Calm first: loosely wrap in a towel to prevent struggling
- 2Open fracture (bone visible): cover with clean dressing
- 3Splint with cardboard or rolled magazines alongside the limb, bandaged loosely
- 4Small pets: transport in a carrier lined with towels
- 5Large dogs: stretcher (blanket + two people), kept flat
- 6Note the fall height / mechanism and tell the vet
⛔ Never do this
- ✕Don't attempt reduction yourself
- ✕Don't give painkillers (human drugs are toxic to pets)
- ✕Don't let the pet walk or jump
🏥 Go to the vet immediately if:
- ⚠Every suspected fracture needs X-rays
- ⚠Exposed bone, cold limb, or complete non-weight-bearing
