Burn and scald first aid
The principles for hot water, pans, chemicals or electrical burns: cool, cover, transport. Depth is easily underestimated under the coat.
⚠️ 🚨 Emergency
No toothpaste, soy sauce or butter on burns — they trap heat and add infection.
🚨 First-aid steps
- 1Flush the area with cool running water for 10-20 minutes
- 2Electrical burns: cut power before touching the pet
- 3Chemical burns: wear gloves, flush with water for at least 20 minutes
- 4Cover loosely with clean moist dressing
- 5Keep the pet warm (large burn areas lose heat fast)
- 6Note the cause and duration; transport
⛔ Never do this
- ✕No ice packs or ice water (vasoconstriction deepens necrosis)
- ✕Don't burst blisters or peel skin
- ✕Even small burns need the vet — depth is underestimated under fur
🏥 Go to the vet immediately if:
- ⚠Any burn larger than a coin
- ⚠All chemical and electrical burns
- ⚠Face, perineum or paw-pad burns
